Judy Smith Thill, Fire Chief for the City of Inver Grove Heights Fire Department since 2007, was the recent recipient of both state-wide and national leadership awards. The state-wide Fire Officer of the Year Award was presented by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) and the International Association of Fire chief (IAFC), Volunteer and Combination Officers Section aware.
The state-wide award presents only two awards a year, one for a Fire Chief of a community with less than 10,000 and one with more than 10,000 in population. The awards were based on Chief Thill’s involvement in many activities at the local, county, state and national levels.
For almost her entire 29 years in fire service, Chief Thill has been involved in training health and safety to Firefighters throughout MN. She was appointed by the Governor to serve as a member of the MN Board of Firefighter Education and Training. Known for her passion helping to keep first responders safe when working around moving traffic, Chief Thill has been teaching Roadway Safety classes to Fire, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical, Tow, Streets and Utility employees throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin for over 15 years.
The national John Buckman III Leadership Award was presented by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), Volunteer and Combination Officers Section at their annual conference in Clearwater, Florida. Chief Thill was selected from Fire Chiefs throughout the nation. Beyond her state-wide involvement, she has also worked with the IAFC to create a safety and health program for all fire departments, was a Board member for the National Volunteer Fire Council and served on the Traffic Safety Advisory Panel for the Federal Highway Administration.
The City is honored to have a highly regarded Fire Chief with Judy Thill’s qualifications, high service level and integrity. "What inspires me is to give back, help people and show people that they're important." - Judy Thill
