Become a Police Officer through the Pathway to Policing Program

DSCN1315

Have you ever thought about serving your community as a police officer? If you love to help people and want to make a difference, this is your chance to begin a career in law enforcement!

As part of the City’s commitment to attract non-traditional candidates to policing, the Inver Grove Heights Police Department is exploring participation in "Pathways to Policing" for the recruitment and hiring of the department's 40th police officer this fall.

"Pathways to Policing" provides a unique entry to a career in policing by providing select candidates paid academic and law enforcement skills training needed to secure Minnesota Peace Officer licensure.

This multi-city effort aims to provide a non-traditional pathway to a career in law enforcement.  The list of participating cities has not been finalized. However, interested cities include:
•Bloomington
•St. Louis Park
•Eagan
•Hastings
•Maplewood
•MAC (Metropolitan Airports Commission)
•Columbia Heights
•Inver Grove Heights
•Shakopee
•Plymouth

The Pathways to Policing Program is designed to bring non-traditional candidates into the field of law enforcement, thereby removing barriers for those who wish to enter the career. Specifically, candidates with cultural competency skills and tools and those with experience living or working with culturally diverse populations will be given preference in order to more closely align departments with the communities they serve.

Individuals looking for a new career path and a way to make a difference in their communities are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates earn pay and benefits while attending a full-time professional peace officer education program in Brooklyn Park, MN. Candidates must have a two or four-year college degree in any field of study, but no prior law enforcement training or experience is required. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen with a valid driver's license and no felony or other disqualifying convictions. The program specifically seeks those with the ability to fluently speak and proficiently read and write a second language, in addition to English, and who have experience living or working with culturally diverse populations. Upon completion of the education program (approximately 22 weeks), trainees must attain POST licensure before transitioning to a full time Police Officer position with one of the participating cities.

Learn More at an Informational Session

Inver Grove Heights will host an informational session on May 2, 2018, at 6:30 PM at Inver Grove Heights City Hall, 8150 Barbara Avenue, Inver Grove Heights, MN.

Two other informational sessions will be held in Bloomington on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 4 pm at Bloomington City Hall, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington, MN. The second informational session will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 10 am (location to be determined). Family members are also welcome to attend the informational meetings to learn more about law enforcement careers.

How the Program Works

Successful applicants will be hired as Police Trainees by a participating suburban police department. This is a full-time position with a starting wage of $21.00 per hour, plus insurance and pension benefits. As a Police Trainee, individuals will attend 40 hours a week of college coursework and training at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, MN, for approximately 22 weeks, and then take the licensing exam for police officers. All course fees and equipment are provided and paid for.

Upon graduation and successful completion of the licensing exam, Trainees will be promoted to probationary Police Officers and begin their career in law enforcement just like any other new officer.

Interested individuals should complete a single application form that will be routed to multiple participating police departments. Application review will begin April 23, 2018. After interviews, background checks, and various pre-employment evaluations, successful selected candidates will be given a job offer and enrolled in the Pathways to Policing Program.
